Gabrielle Tito

Final Fantasy

Interview

I am an academically trained painter but I have always been influenced by the fantasy, dream and craft of haute couture. My family was majorly involved in the Italian fashion industry and I spent a lot of my childhood in the open museum that is Rome which majorly influenced my penchant for mixing fine art and fashion.

When did you first get into drawing?

I grew up surrounded by the paintings, drawings and fashion illustrations created by my late Aunt, artist Rinnà Tito. Since early childhood I was copying her drawings.

Even though she died before I was born, she was my first art teacher and inspiration. I was making copies of her old master copies before I even understood that they were old master copies.

Why did you choose to make fashion part of your inspiration?

I knew that I wanted to be an artist like her probably before I even understood that it was a vocation. Her many sketchbooks of fashion illustrations are what inspired me to integrate fashion into my work.

What is your particular working day as a creative?

I try to work in my studio for at least six hours a day. I prefer working by natural north light.

What tools do you use when creating your images?

Currently, I’m working mainly in oils on linen canvas or graphite on paper.

Who or what has influenced you over the years as an artist?

I am an academically trained painter but I have always been influenced by the fantasy, dream and craft of haute couture. My family was majorly involved in the Italian fashion industry and I spent a lot of my childhood in the open museum that is Rome which majorly influenced my penchant for mixing fine art and fashion.

What advice do you have for younger artists looking to be part of this industry?

I would tell young artists to learn their craft and surround themselves with a community of people who share their passion.

What are you drawing today?
am currently painting a portrait layered in a vintage Valentino Couture gown that was designed in 1967.

What music are you listening to/books are you reading? Favourite artist/designer at the moment?
I’m reading The Time in Between by Maria Dueñas. I tend to work with background music or a movie soundtrack that fits the mood of the painting. At this moment, the movie soundtrack of La Dolce Vita is working magic for my studio vibe. I am obsessed with the cinematic and theatrical vision of fashion created by designer Pier Paolo Piccioli.
