Spiros Halaris Interview

The Early Bird Catches the work

Interview

I'm an early person so I like to get up and start drawing, drafting or completing illustrations - that's the part of the day I get most of the creative work done- then the later part of the day is for emails and admin - and at night I usually sketch 1-2 ideas in my sketchbook to clear my head.

When did you first get into drawing?

I was always drawing in some form or way ever since I can remember - but it was much later in college that I discovered illustration and the various ways of drawing.

Why did you choose to make fashion part of your inspiration?

It was the elements of fantasy and level of creativity that I was first drawn to - and the power of transformation!

What is your particular working day as a creative?

I'm an early person so I like to get up and start drawing, drafting or completing illustrations - that's the part of the day I get most of the creative work done- then the later part of the day is for emails and admin - and at night I usually sketch 1-2 ideas in my sketchbook to clear my head.

What tools do you use when creating your images?

I use acrylic gouache and Photoshop.

Who has influenced you over the years as an artist?

Allen Jones, Aubrey Beardsley, Guy Bourdin and Barry Lategan and 20s-30s fashion illustrators like Georges Lepape and George Barbier.

What advice do you have for younger artists looking to be part of this industry?

Master your craft whatever that is - know it well, have fun with it and experiment. Repeat!

What are you drawing today? Music are you listening to? Books that you are reading?

Working on a series of illustrated short stories that I'm writing and illustrating. Lately I've been into soundtracks from Henry Mancini and François de Roubaix. I have been reading mostly biographies, the last two were of Marchesa Luisa Casati and the other of Edward Gorey.

Favourite artist/designer at the moment?

I really love what Guillaume Henry is doing with the revamp of the maison Patou.
