Interview

“I was awful. With fashion, every measurement has to be exact, and I was not very precise,” she says. But while her experience in pattern making was dismal, her skill and interest in the field’s subset—fashion illustration—blossomed. An art teacher at the fashion school who saw how Persson excelled at fashion illustration encouraged her to go to New York to study illustration at Pratt Institute. And so, in 1995, she did."

"Keep at it. Try to find your voice/style. Try to find inspiration outside of fashion illustration. "

"I think it's people expressing themselves that intrigue me rather than hemlines and ruffles. It could be clothes but also make up, hair or just a pose."

Stina Persson

When did you first get into drawing?
I don't think I remember a time when I didn't draw. My entire childhood was spent drawing.

Why did you choose to make fashion part of your inspiration?
I want to art school in Italy, where fashion seems to be seeped into the everyday life. My friends studied fashion and I did a semester studying fashion design at Polimoda in Florence.

I think it's people expressing themselves that intrigue me rather than hemlines and ruffles. It could be clothes but also make up, hair or just a pose.

What is your particular working day as a creative?

I get to work early everyday, usually before 8. That gives me the chance to have a soft morning, replying to emails, paying bills and organising my day. After coffee I usually start with the most urgent project, or sometimes the most fun. Depending upon mood...

What tools do you use when creating your images?

I use a lot of liquid paints such as inks, watercolour or acrylics, but I also love flat fields of colour and sharp edges and love to cut pieces of coloured paper to my work.

What advice do you have for younger artists looking to be part of this industry?

Keep at it. Try to find your voice/style. Try to find inspiration outside of fashion illustration.

What are you drawing today? Music are you listening to? Books that your are reading? Favourite artist/designer at the moment?

Today I am working on a cook book created by a well known fashion designer actually.

(I cannot say anything more at this point)
I am mostly listening to podcasts such as The Daily, This American Life and BBC World. Or music by First Aid Kit, Little Dragon or RABBII.
I am reading The God Child Nana Oforiatta Ayim and just finished the Essex Serpent bu Sarah Perry.
I'm longing to go to museums again and find new artist's to get inspired by. But IG I do love Emma Kohlmann(@meiow_mix), Petra Börner(@petraborner) and Deborah Roberts (@rdeborah191
