Elena Lipsos

Elena Lipsos

Biography

A mostly self-taught artist, Elena has attended classes at both UAL and Central Saint Martin’s in London, as well as having been tutored in life drawing by a Florentine Academy trained teacher. Although having dedicated her student life to studying art academically (eventually writing a PhD thesis on a history of eroticised femininity in pin-up images), Elena has practised art and illustration from a young age and, growing up in 1990s London, became particularly interested in fashion illustration, inspired by the fashion scene of the time, especially the theatrical shows of Vivienne Westwood, Jean-Paul Gaultier, Thierry Mugler and John Galliano, and the fashion illustrations of David Downton.

In her own illustrations Elena cultivates a propensity for decadence, retro-glamour and eroticism with a touch of surrealism, while at times paying homage to art styles ranging from the Rococo and Pre-Raphaelitism to vintage mid-twentieth-century lifestyle illustration, to the photography of Guy Bourdin and Fernand Fonssagrives. Elena is primarily a technical drawing artist; her preferred materials are the mixed mediums of pencil/graphite, watercolour and gouache, with an occasional use of pastels and/or ink.
