BLURRING VISION AND LINE
An obvious influence is, I think, the figures that I often source and work with. Of course, once in my world these are subject to lots of changes, cuts, distortions; I mess with the very idea of beauty and the concept of perfection/imperfection and so on, so at times the fashion element might be hard to trace.

A Folklore Epiphany

It was like an epiphany. Fashion was the obvious subject of choice but it's the mood of the subject that inspires me. I could represent a fabric in the most perfect way possible but if the eyes are not right then it goes in the bin or gets sliced up for a collage.

Natural Instinct

Maria.G.West shares her thoughts

I would know if an idea is not worth pursuing because it’s usually followed by me losing interest and not wanting to continue. A different direction will almost immediately begin. If not then I would leave it for a while and come back to it with a fresh perspective. I learned to trust my instinct over the years.

I always like to draw people, human portrait, figure. I admire the beauty of the humans body. I never was a fashion lover or so, but it changed when I started to draw different collections and items for the game.

An Expression of Oneself

Take creative risks. - Kathy Wyatt

Draw from life as often as they can, a good understanding of the human figure and how it moves is as essential as knowledge of the cut of garments in the visual interpretation of how clothing hangs on the body. In addition- not to look sideways and to take creative risks.

The love of Cinema - Melanie De Jong

"My phone is my holy grail, I make pictures or screenshots from things I see.
Buildings, nature, animals, colours, patterns. Lots of hand images and different angles of the face, because I love drawing emotion in my illustrations. Mostly I draw with the image in my phone, I like to expand the image to see the details better. Some days I think it's better to print the image out."

Learning your craft
"The advice I could give is to experiment a lot, practice with as many different style and media as possible, do not stick only to what you were taught to do, especially in a sector like this, being able to propose something new, personal, unique, is certainly one of the best business cards you can offer."

"Advice. That’s a hard one.
Be obsessed about what you do and nerd out on all aspects of it. And you can’t please everyone, so don’t try to, even though I try to all the time - it’s a trap. And…work on growing a thick skin. It is not a gentle industry."

    Words of Wisdom

Fashion is rediscovering the art of illustration Drawing and fashion have always been intimately linked, the sketch represents a first step in the construction of a garment or an accessory. We all remember, the precise and vivid line of a Yves Saint Laurent or a Karl Lagerfeld whose sketches decoded by the little hands of the workshops gave birth to sublime couture creations … At the beginning of the last century, the covers magazines whose emblematic Vogue were illustrated and illustrators such as René Gruau were the real stars of the time.
